God provides for our failure

Wednesday Reflection

The Lord guides us in the way we should go and protects those who please him.

23 The Lord guides us in the way we should go and protects those who please him Ps 37:23, 24 (GNB)

When we first read these verses, it is easy to focus on the fact that God guides and protects those who put their trust in him.
It is comforting, motivating and encouraging.
But the second half, verse 24 is equally, if not more, important

24 If they fall, they will not stay down, because the Lord will help them up.

What an amazing statement!
Even when we are being guided and protected by the Lord we can still mess up!
God knows that while we may be seeking to walk with him, we can still get it wrong, there's always that human factor.
Our human nature gets in the way.
Sometimes we make the wrong decisions, sometimes we can be a bit stubborn;
sometimes we mess up however hard we try; and it's the last thing we want to do.

If we're feeling a bit like that today, don't beat up yourself, take heart, even when we stumble and fall God will not abandon us.
He will support us and help us up again.

The Bible is filled with stories of people that have struggled, stumbled, failed and simply just messed up.
David with Bathsheba, Samson with Delilah, (why is there so often a woman around!)
Even the great Moses had a troubled life before God called him to bring his people out of Egypt.
Then there's Jonah who blatantly defied God.
Frightened, Peter denied Jesus; Paul was so zealous in his Jewish faith, that he wanted to eradicate Christians completely.
God intervened in all these lives and brought about good.
It's in examples like these that the Lord teaches us His greatest lessons and He reveals His will along the way.
It's also an opportunity to see the power of God's great mercy, forgiveness and grace.
Deut. 33:27 says

'The eternal God is your refuge and underneath are his everlasting arms'

The Psalmist echoes this

' God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.' 46:1

This brings me a lot of comfort. We may stumble, we may fall, but we are not going to stay down,
because God's arms are about us and he will lift us up, once again, in his hands.

Thank God for his faithfulness and protection.
