The Day of the Lord Is Coming
Malachi 4.1-2a
Good News Translation (GNT)
*************************
1 The Lord Almighty says, "The day is coming
when all proud and evil people will burn like
straw. On that day they will burn up, and there
will be nothing left of them.
2 But for you who obey me, my saving power
will rise on you like the sun and bring healing
like the sun's rays.

The Day of the Lord Is Coming
Malachi 4.1-2a
These words are addressed to the nation of Israel four hundred years
before Jesus, my saving power (the 'sun of righteousness'), appears on earth as a baby.
They serve to underline all that has been said before about the consequences
of Israel's behaviour. Whilst both obedience to and rejection of God will be
judged, only one will bring blessing from his hand.
He is coming.
It may well be that these words encouraged 'those who feared the Lord'
to carry on living faithful, obedient lives in the knowledge that although
they may not see him, a Saviour would come bringing 'healing in [his] wings'
Now we know that Jesus did come, and we live in the light and life he brings
while we wait for his sure return, do these words encourage us to do the same?
Oi! You! Fix it!
The final paragraphs of the Old Testament are a stern warning:
Sort it out. Now.
It foretells both the first and second comings of Jesus.
He would cut to the quick - or down to the stubble - the puffed up hypocrites
and those who do evil.
And here we read that the stubble itself will be burned up.
It spells out total desolation!
The Sun Son
For those who love the Lord, though, there is certainly hope!
Jesus will 'rise with healing on his wings', which is a beautiful phrase of itself,
and offers nothing but good things.
This again can relate to both the teachings of Jesus, where he promises that
the poor, meek and broken will be blessed, and New Testament teaching
about the 'Second Coming' of Jesus,
after which all true believers will live with God
in the new heaven and the new earth.
