The Future King
Zechariah 9:9-12
Good News Translation (GNT)
*************************
9 Rejoice, rejoice, people of Zion!
Shout for joy, you people of Jerusalem!
Look, your king is coming to you!
He comes triumphant and victorious,
but humble and riding on a donkey -
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10The Lord says,
"I will remove the war chariots from Israel
and take the horses from Jerusalem;
the bows used in battle will be
destroyed.
Your king will make peace among the
nations;
he will rule from sea to sea,
from the Euphrates River to the ends of
the earth."
The Restoration of God's People
11The Lord says,
"Because of my covenant with you
that was sealed by the blood of
sacrifices,
I will set your people free -
sacrifices,free from the waterless pit
of exile.
12 Return, you exiles who now have hope;
return to your place of safety.
Now I tell you that I will repay you
twice over
with blessing for all you have suffered.

The Future King
Zechariah 9:9-12
The Messianic King
God's righteousness is best seen in our Lord Jesus,
in whom the kingdom of God comes.
He is the Messianic King from the line of David,
whose coming the prophet Zechariah proclaims
to returned exiles in Jerusalem, six centuries BC.
In a twelve-line poem, Zechariah calls God's people to shout
and rejoice greatly when they see the promised arrival of
their victorious King.
This King is not like other kings.
He displays none of the usual kingly qualities
of attachment to material wealth or military power.
He comes triumphant and victorious,
('righteous and having salvation' )(v 9).
'He is victorious, not in himself or anything that he personally
commands, but by the grace, and in the might, of the God of Israel.'
He is humble (gentle) and comes in peace,
not riding a war-horse, but an ass.
In verse 10 the Lord himself speaks.
He will take away the weapons of warfare
and bring peace to all nations when his righteous King rules
over his worldwide kingdom with concern for the welfare of all peoples.
He will bring the peace of salvation and covenant blessings,
promising freedom, restoration and hope for the imprisoned,
and the uniting of God's divided people.
All this is achieved through Jesus' shed blood,
which seals God's covenant with humanity.
This is the kingdom of God, of which we are citizens.
Do we live by the values of his kingdom,
or do we grasp for security,
significance, power or wealth, like the rest of the world?
What does God's righteousness look like in our daily lives in 2026?
