"Be Still"
Should we wait on God
without Action?
It seems we can be still before Him without worry,
or taking action on the thing we are asking about.
Still, the context of verse 7 in Psalm 37, tells us that we can be still, wait patiently (while not worrying), and still take action of some sort.
I often interpret this verse to mean, "while you are being still in heart and spirit and maybe even in mind on the matter you are praying about, you can still work at the things involved in your question (or waiting for direction) while working toward your solution."
How does this look?
While I am waiting to hear the answer to my questions "Why am I supposed to work on this degree, why am I studying, or how God might use this," I continue my work.
Unless He tells me to withdraw (which He did once) I continue my studies.
Will He tell me to stop?
Sometimes He does.
Will He tell me to go in a different direction? Sometimes He has.
Will He tell me to add something else before He gives me an answer?
Yes, He has at times.
What is most important is to note our thoughts: we think it is good or bad, right or wrong, purposeful or not.
This thinking pattern keeps us held in a simplistic mindset that suggests there are only two answers: yes or no, right or wrong, on the path or not.
In God's reality His way of thinking is much higher than ours,
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord.
9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts"
... Is. 55: 8-9
I can liken this principle to a son of an architect for example, who says,
"Dad, are you going to build a bungalow?"
and the father says, "Well son, its more complex than that question."
The son cannot understand his father's reply. "What do you mean?
Either you're going to build it nor not."
But the father replies,
"Well it will be a bungalow with so many modifications, that technically, it will no longer fit the bungalow category, but it won't fit any other category either.
I'm going to make it huge and fancy and have all sorts of unique attributes and although the main pattern is a bungalow, it will be so much more intricate in design and appearance, that it will be unrecognizable within the bungalow category."
Now can you see how the Father of heaven might find it challenging to answer our questions as we pose them?
Can you also see that we ask simplistic questions, while Paul urges us not to be like children in our thinking
Do not be like children in your thinking, my friends; be children so far as evil is concerned, but be grown up in your thinking.
... 1 Cor. 14:20.
Ask God how to ask, wait while on him while trusting, taking delight in him and committing your way to Him.
